Devil Comes to Toko

Directed by

Obsessed with the story of the infamous dumping of toxic waste in Nigeria, illegally dumped in the small coastal village of Koko, on the Niger River Delta, the playwright Alfie Nze returns to Nigeria in search of recollections. There he discovered the “Sack of Benin”, one of the most glaring incidents of wholesale identity and art theft in modern history happened during Britain’s reprisal attack on Benin in 1897. In his mind, not only were Europeans responsible for two of the greatest outrages of the history of his country. The twin strands of the stories will be at the base of the new Nze’s play.
