Sucksdorff
biography
He was born in Stockholm on 3 February 1917. He studied natural history and art in Stockholm and at the Reichmannschule in Berlin. He initially worked in photography, also winning several awards. He later turned to film, becoming one of the acknowledged masters of documentary cinema. As cameraman, scriptwriter and editor of all his films, Sucksdorff was able to portray childhood and the relationship between civilisation and nature in particular. In 1947 he won an Academy Award with Människor i stad. With the short film Indisk by and the feature film En Djungelsaga he won awards at the Cannes Film Festival. His feature debut, Det stora äventyret, was a great success, acclaimed by both critics and audiences and awarded at Cannes, Berlin, Montevideo and São Paulo. For thirty years, Sucksdorff has lived in Brazil.
