He was born in Russia in 1948, rose to fame with the feature The Caucasus Prisoner for which he received a nomination for the Oscar. His first films, shot in Russia and dealing with his country's social issues, have received numerous awards in many European Film Festivals. One of them is Freedom and Heaven (1989), on Stalin's gulags. After working abroad for a few years, directing films such as White King, Red Queen (1992), he went back to his country where he got caught in the political turmoil that inspired him I wanted to See Angels.
