His Central do Brasil has won 55 international awards, including the Golden Bear at the 1998 Berlin Festival, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, Best Foreign Film from the National Board of Review, and Best Foreign Film from the British Academy. Terra Estrangeira, co-directed with Daniela Thomas (1995), was named Film of the Year by SESI – Brazilian Industry's Social Service, and by CNBB – the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops in 1996. He has also made award-winning documentaries such as Socorro Nobre, Krajcberg, and Poeta dos Vestígios (Fipa d'Or, Best Research Documentary and the Audience Award at the Festival dei Popoli).
