Taranto chiama

Directed by

An investigative assignment from Triest to Taranto carried out between 2016 and 2024 to shed light on what is happening in the “city of two seas”, identified by the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment as a sacrifice zone due to the environmental damage caused by ILVA, Europe’s largest steel mill. While mainstream narrations address the issues of employment and pollution, the children suffer devastating physical and mental health consequences from the pollution. Mothers, physicians, artists, activists, businessmen, and friars call for justice in their battle against industrial and state interests. The film tells of a community’s courage and determination to create a grassroots model of development and transform suffering into joy.
